Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) is a native prairie perennial treasured for its fragrant, licorice-scented foliage and long spikes of purple flowers that draw bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds all summer long. Native to the upper Midwest and Great Plains, this hardy member of the mint family has been cultivated for centuries by Indigenous peoples for its medicinal and culinary uses. It thrives in sunny, well-drained soils and adds both beauty and biodiversity to pollinator gardens, prairie restorations, and borders. The flowers are edible, the leaves make a soothing tea, and the plant’s drought tolerance and longevity make it an enduring favorite among native gardeners. Also self-seeds readily!
Sow Anise Hyssop in full sun and well-drained soil. For best germination, lightly press seed into the surface and keep moist until established; cold stratification for 30 days can improve results. Space plants 12–18 inches apart. Once established, plants are drought-tolerant and self-sow readily. Cut back after flowering to encourage a second bloom or leave seed heads for birds and winter interest. Excellent for pollinator gardens and prairie plantings.
When started indoors and transplanted after frost, plants typically flower about 80–100 days after transplanting. When direct sown outdoors, most plants focus on vegetative growth their first season and bloom their second year once established.
